SRT® Hallmarks: 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT interior design.
Style, functionality and authenticity were the main ingredients used during the interior design process of the all-new 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT®. Engineers, designers and stylists all had a hand in blending form and function to the eye-catching interior that has been created.
Among the most prominent features upon entry into the 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT are a brand-new steering wheel, all-new instrument panel cluster, an integrated center stack, updated push-to-start button, re-designed storage bins on the doors and more. Striking colors and surfaces were key motivators for the design team as they molded the premium interior.
"We used a whole new set of materials," said Chris Welch, Senior Designer, Chrysler Group LLC. "Color and trim were very important as well. We spent a lot of time and effort trying to get different looks. We really wanted to highlight the designs and shapes that are in the vehicle with different materials and get some harmonies that we came close to in the past. We were really trying to get close to that super-premium feel, without taking away from the value that is already there."
The brand-new steering wheel in the Grand Cherokee SRT is the first new wheel on a Jeep® brandproduct in a number of years. Staying true to the SRT way, the steering wheel is leather-clad and flat-bottomed and features paddle shifters. Paired with the new eight-speed transmission on the Grand Cherokee is a new and a more shapely shifter.
The completely re-designed cluster in the 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT is highlighted by a 7-inch digital display screen, which allows for ample configuration and customer customization. Integrated into the center stack is an 8.4-inch touchscreen featuring the Chrysler Uconnect® system, bringing hands-free communication and navigation to the Grand Cherokee SRT. In addition to the touchscreen, traditional buttons are still part of the vehicle, with graphics that are easy-to-see and physically closer for ease of operation.
"For a Jeep customer the presence of a hard switch or button is an authenticity queue," noted Welch. "Having hard switches that move really speaks to the machine and are authentic, while also complementing the touchscreen. The switches and buttons are right there at your fingertips."
Customarily one of the most popular items on the Grand Cherokee SRT has been the spacious storage bins. The bins on the doors have been completely re-designed and still maintain plenty of storage space, while the center storage bin has become a media hub, with a USB port, auxiliary jack and a slot for an SD card.
"We were really trying to give the customer what they wanted in terms of media, while not taking away from core value of the Grand Cherokee, which is the front storage bin and all the control access at your fingertips," noted Welch.
The second row of the Grand Cherokee SRT was treated just like the front, as no stone was left unturned. Recessed cup holders in the armrests provide extra comfort for those long trips and also carry a stylish look. Revamped pocket lighting on the second row doors is now a soft white hue and angled to illuminate the map pocket on the back of the seats.
"It's a spinning plate, balancing act," explained Welch of the interior design process. "You have design on one hand, color and trim on the other hand, along with authenticity and function. You are trying to balance all of those things and balance them well. On this Grand Cherokee we really took it to the next level. We made it better and improved everything we could put our hands on."
Creature comforts paired with traditional Grand Cherokee performance, functionality and authenticity, it's all standard when you open the door and look inside the brand-new 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT.
