While the HEMI® under the hood of the Charger SRT gets most of the attention, it wouldn't be able to take advantage of the 470 horsepower it produces without a practical and functional hood. From both an aesthetics and performance point-of-view, the hood serves distinct purposes on the Charger SRT.

The hood on the Charger SRT is laser-cut from top-of-the-line aluminum. The use of aluminum helps reduce weight, and it aids in preventing corrosion. Styling lines and cues add to the overall aggressive stance of its exterior and are very pleasing to the eye. The hood plays a major role in that look.

"The hood was a very challenging part of the face," said Nicho Vardis, Exterior Lead Designer, Charger. "The hood is an important part of the face and the overall appearance. It's a very aggressive, sculptural shape that also functions very well, thus fitting the bill of what we always set out for at SRT."

Helping on the performance side, the hood on the Charger SRT features a vent that serves as an air extractor. Hot air is pulled out of the engine bay through the vent on the hood to help keep the 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 at its optimal operating temperature.

"If you look at the design it's kind of in a horse-collar shape around the perimeter," said Vardis. "It has this aggressive power bulge to it. Part of that horse-collar is a vent, and that's where the heat is extracted from the engine bay. That allowed us to get some horsepower gains from the powertrain. That was all by the hood design."

As with most projects at SRT, the all-aluminum hood on the Charger has been an evolution from previous models. Various designers and engineers from both inside and outside of the automotive realm were involved in the extensive process.

"When you start a program like that, there are always angles and draft radii that need to be bounced off the engineering community and stamping community," said Vardis. "Some of those cool technologies for manufacturing helped us produce the hood. We had to look for innovative ways to achieve the design."

A chiseled, muscular looking hood that helps the car flex its true muscle, that's what the engineering and design team set out to do with the Charger SRT.
