Scott Thomas will always remember March 29, 2013, as will the entire team at SRT®. What makes this date so significant is that it’s the day that Thomas took delivery of the first 2013 SRT Viper, less than a year after the fifth-generation of the iconic supercar was introduced to the world at the New York International Auto Show.
Thomas, a native of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, successfully bid $300,000 to win the first 2013 SRT Viper last June at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Orange County, California. Proceeds from the auction went to the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. The car, which shimmers in Stryker Red, bears the first Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the new production generation.
“I’ve been anxiously awaiting this since we bought the car at Barrett-Jackson,” said Thomas. “The Viper is my nine-year-old son’s favorite car, so he’s been anxiously awaiting it as well. I have two Vipers in my collection and this is the icing on the cake.”
Thomas, 40, who has a 2005 Viper and a 2006 Viper, saw his 2013 Viper once prior to delivery as he made the trip to the Motor City in January to witness the car roll off the line at the historic home of the Viper — Conner Avenue Assembly Plant. Production of the hand-crafted 2013 SRT Viper began in early January and continues, with more deliveries to follow.
“It was great to visit the plant and be surrounded by all of the employees who helped put the car together,” he shared. “To get the keys from Sergio (Marchionne) and meet Ralph (Gilles) again and see everyone was great. It was pretty exciting to be a part of that.”
Delivery of the first 2013 SRT Viper to Thomas was coordinated by Ben Keating of the Viper Exchange in Tomball, Texas, the largest volume Viper dealer in the world. Earlier this week, Keating and his team conducted a pre-delivery inspection on the Viper, prepared all the paperwork for the vehicle and made sure the car was ready to be delivered to Thomas.
Thomas already has plans for his Viper — this weekend. He looks to attend a local Viper Club event on Saturday, March 30, as long as the weather holds out, to share his new supercar with other owners. The event hosts automotive students from a local vocational school, providing them an up-close look at Vipers, and even giving them a chance to change the oil and perform similar maintenance duties on some of the vehicles.
The 2013 Viper is powered by an 8.4-liter V-10 engine that churns out 640 horsepower. Nearly every chassis system and component on the 2013 SRT Viper, including structure, brakes, suspension, steering, wheels and tires, have been re-engineered, redesigned and refined to increase overall performance and shed weight while keeping a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
The delivery marks the start of customer deliveries for the latest SRT Viper. Earlier this week, the first customer-ordered Vipers began their journey across the country to reach anxious owners.
