Challenger SRT Powertrain

Awe-Inspiring Powertrain

Beneath the Challenger's hood lies the venerable 392 HEMI® V-8 rated at 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Peak torque comes at 4200 RPM, while horsepower reaches its summit just before redline at 6000 RPM.

The standard six-speed Tremec manual transmission is equipped with a dual-disc high-performing clutch - first introduced with the 2008 Viper. An optional five-speed automatic transmission gives drivers the option to select a specific gear via steering wheel-mounted paddles or the Auto Stick shift lever. A Getrag limited-slip differential ensures both drive wheels spin in harmony.

Automatic-equipped cars feature Fuel Saver Technology helping to conserve gas between stints of spirited driving. The technology shuts down one bank of cylinders under light load, allowing the high-powered Challenger to achieve a fuel economy rating of 14 in the city and 23 on the highway. Manual equipped cars achieve equal fuel economy numbers.

Outstanding Ride, Handling and Capability

Adaptive Damping Suspension is new for the Challenger SRT8 in 2012. The new system offers the flexibility to choose between "Auto" and "Sport" suspension characteristics dependent on conditions and driver mood.

Auto mode constantly monitors road conditions and driver inputs to deliver a comfortable ride suitable for daily commutes. In Sport mode, damper rate is increased dramatically to provide better road feel for improved handling. Suspension modes are selectable on the fly and take effect almost instantly. A lower center of gravity is achieved by lowering the coupe a half inch compared to the standard car. Road feel is improved upon further thanks to the damped, SRT-tuned steering system.

Standard five-spoke 20-inch wheels come as standard equipment, while seven-spoke wheels of the same diameter are offered as an option. Both are constructed from forged aluminum for added strength. All-season Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires come standard and perform very well in all conditions. Optional Goodyear F1 Supercar tires offer the utmost in grip during hard acceleration and cornering helping the Challenger SRT8 achieve .90g of lateral acceleration.

Benchmark Braking

Quick lap times require superior stopping ability. Brembo components utilized at all four corners give the Challenger what it needs to decelerate in a hurry. Four-piston calipers grab slotted 14.2-inch rotors in the front and 13.8-inch discs on the rear. This hardware slows the Challenger from zero to sixty MPH in an astounding 117 feet. Cooling ducts integrated into the belly pan ensure repeated fade-free braking. Ready Alert Braking sets brake pads against rotors when the accelerator pedal is quickly lifted, effectively reducing stopping distances.

Aggressive and Functional Exterior

Every exterior feature on the Challenger SRT8 was implemented for a purpose. Track tuning of the splitter and front fascia help the coupe remain stable at top speed - 180 mph manual (173 mph automatic).

Challenger SRT8 392s will not get lost in a parking lot. Unique "392" badging found on the front fenders recalls the powertrain's historic significance. Affirming its place in the Muscle car segment, hot exhaust gasses escape via four-inch rectangular outlets. Goodyear Eagle RS-A rubber encircle 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with black painted pockets and a machine finish.
